Univision Communications Inc. and Fundación Televisa announced the launch of ¿Y Tú…A Quién Becarías? – a new program where the community will select 17 college students across the country to pay for their fourth year of studies. The scholarships will be distributed through Hispanics in Philanthropy (HIP), a transnational network of grant creators committed to strengthening Latino communities across the Americas.

“Univision is looking forward to working with our partner network, Televisa, to join forces to increase educational opportunities for Hispanic students across communities in the United States,” said Cesar Conde, president, Univision Networks. “Through our multi-year, multiplatform education initiative ¡Es el momento! we remain committed to bridging the current education gap, and look forward to working with Televisa on this new scholarship program.”

The launch of the new ¿Y Tú…A Quién Becarías? program was announced on Univision’s show “HOY" (Today), during its second annual national education week “¡Edúcate, Es el momento!" (Educate yourself, The Moment is Now). The seven-day education call to action (October 7-13, 2012) features a town hall, special programming at the network and local levels, and local workshops and phone banks. The weeklong activities will help better equip Hispanic families with the tools and information they need to successfully navigate the education system and the financial process so they can guide their children to academic success.

“Fundación Televisa is committed to strengthening educational opportunities for the Latino community,” said Alicia Lebrija, executive president for Fundación Televisa. “Today we launched our first initiative through these scholarship programs. We look forward to working together with Univision.”

From October 9 to November 23, 2012, students will have the opportunity to register online by uploading a one-minute video to tell their story and explain why they should be considered a candidate for the scholarship. Selected finalists will then leave fate in the hands of voters, as they race to win the largest number of votes for their videos on www.eselmomento.com. Winning students, to be announced in December 2012, will receive a scholarship to pay for their fourth year of studies beginning in August 2013.

Throughout this week, Univision and Televisa will also be awarding 1,000 English courses through Univision’s morning show “Despierta América.”
